In a surprisingly even-matched competition, Croatia was defeated by Brazil 3-1 in the today’s opening World Cup match-up. At the 11′ minute mark, Brazil went down 0-1 due to Brazil’s Marcelo scoring on his own goal. 18 minutes later, Brazil’s Neymar scored a left footed shot from the outside the box. Going into the half, the score remained 1-1. Following the first half, both teams came out pretty energized for the start of the second half. Tough defense from Croatia stopped a lot of possible goals for Brazil’s great offensive team. A late and highly controversial call, however, led Brazil to attempt a penalty kick at the 71′ minute marker. Brazil Neymar converted on the penalty kick (left corner), despite a great attempt from Croatia’s goal keeper Stipe Pletikosa. After going under 2-1, Croatia had a few good looks at the goal, however, never found the rhythm to convert. The dagger of this game came when Brazil’s Oscar made a nice shot at the 90′ minute mark.
