Game Changer: Houston District Attorney Candidate Wants To Eradicate Marijuana Arrests!

Looks like the Houston’s District Attorney’s race is heating up right in time before election season is underway. In this year’s upcoming election, November 4, 2014, Houston’s current District Attorney Devon Anderson will defending her seat against Democratic candidate Kim Ogg. In recent news, Kim Ogg has voiced her opinion about petty marijuana laws used to throw thousands of Houston citizens in jail each year. According to reports, Kim Ogg wants to ticket and force community service upon those who violate small marijuana offenses, rather than arrest and jail violators.

[Kim Ogg Told Reporters]

–“We can save up to 10 million dollars a year, folks. We think that taxpayers deserve to have their money spent wisely.”

“This is the future of marijuana prosecution in Harris County, our tagline is ‘No jail, no bail, no permanent record, if you earn it.’

“Law enforcement officers can expect to be tied up on a misdemeanor marijuana arrest at least three hours or more. My program means more police officers on the streets to respond to rape, burglary and gang-related crimes.”–

According to multiple reports, counties in Texas passed a law years ago that gave cops the exclusive right to ticket or arrest marijuana violators. However, the only city thus far to adopt this option has been Austin, Texas ( Texas State Capital). Post hearing Kim Ogg’s progressive movement on decriminalizing marijuana, Chron.com reports that Devon Anderson and her office said they plan on implementing a similar stance on this law. However, we doubt this is true due to her previous statements against marijuana earlier this year.

We wonder how this will affect voter turn out for Houston’s upcoming election? More so, we wonder how many candidates will “flip-flop” their previous biases on marijuana charges to increase their respective voter turn out? With progressive movements building all across this nation, one may start to see many candidates pushing for this call of action. Determining which candidate is genuine about this issue can be a big problem, however, doing research about a prospective candidate can always help as well. We believe Kim Ogg’s stance, do you feel the same? Let us know below!
