The past two weeks there has been a lot of debate over the two game suspension given to Baltimore Ravens running back for the assault charges brought unto him for attacking his wife. This debate naturally made it’s way to ESPN’s popular show “First Take” and instead of focusing on Ray Rice’s suspension and whether or not it was justified; Stephen A. Smith chose to dwell on the topic of domestic violence & here is what he had to say…..
Naturally, there was a huge amount of backlash, like what happened to Tony Dungy earlier in the month in regards to Michael Sam. Stephen A. Smith despite his success isn’t ready to give up his position as the co-headliner for ESPN’s most popular show. So of course he had to perform what Journalist like to call a “Retraction” of his previous statements.
Regardless of ones position on whether Stephen A. Smith is wrong or right; the whole point of them talking about the issue in the first place was to “EMBRACE DEBATE” and speak candidly on the subject at hand. So why does one have to be punished for having a position that isn’t the “Politically Correct Response?” It’s getting to the point now in our society where it’s almost decorum to always “Take The High Road” on these hot topics when in public (or in this case on National Television) Because the amount of anger from people on social media is not worth jeopardizing your reputation or even worse your career. Stephen A. Smith should have known better after witnessing his collegue Rob Parker lose position at ESPN for these comments.
