Initially, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Moxiie‘s “Anyway” packs a near-overwhelming punch, with a thoroughly concussive synth cascade. In those opening moments of her debut single, it’d be easy to be reminded of progressive noise pop outfits like Sleigh Bells or even Crystal Castles. But then the wormy, underlying instrumental opens up, saving us from being completely enveloped from said bombardment of bass.
It’s at that point that the song’s two sonic elements smoothly converge for an intoxicating, if not brash, tune that gives way to the real star of the show in Moxiie. Unlike an Alexis Krauss or Alice Glass, who frequently allow their striking vocals to be swallowed up by overpowering production, Moxiie sings with an airy clarity. By the end of the track, it’s easy to see why her comparisons have more closely aligned with Charli XCX and Santigold. For more on Moxiie, click here.
