The principal for Mount Anthony Union high school located in Bennington, Vermont has established a new agenda for her students & faculty this school year.
School Objective: to Ban “Twerking”
No seriously…….
Mount Anthony Union principal, Sue Maguire, has not only cancelled the Homecoming dance for the 2014 year, she has even gone as far to consider cancelling any & all school dances with hopes of preventing students from “twerking”. Apparently Maguire is under the impression that high school kids only go to parties if their located at their high school & has even used a classic 80’s movie to support her argument.
Maguire was quoted stating, “If you look at the dancing in Footloose, and the dancing we’re seeing, they’re not the same at all. This is what they’re exposed to, this is what they think is okay … Unfortunately, our young people are continuously exposed to a culture filled with sexualized images and messages, but this should not and cannot be permitted at our school.”
This is a classic example of a high authority figure abusing their power on something they don’t like personally as opposed to focusing on actual important issues of relevance. Regardless of how promiscuous a form of dancing may appear, it is still in fact “Dancing”. Moreover, in today’s pop-culture “twerking” is and will continue to be prevalent so long as celebrities continue to market toward the youth in such manner. One may not approve of a particular expression of dance, but a form of such a popular dance will happen regardless, with or without supervision. Also, last time I checked, dancing has never had any long term negative impact on young adolescents.
What makes this story even more intriguing is the fact that the state of Vermont just last year was ranked NUMBER 1 in the US for underage drinking at 37% of Vermont youths from ages 12 to 20.
Furthermore Vermont was also ranked number 1 in 2013 for Marijuana use by Vermont youth at 14.04% which is actually lower than the overall percent of any illegal drug use for the entire population in Vermont at 15.29%.
So essentially, Mount Union Anthony High School principal Sue Maguire will inevitably increase possible decisions that could increase an already high rate of alcohol & drug use. Only this time without the supervision of teachers of course since there is no longer a high school dance for students to attend. I don’t know about you, but once that concept came across my head I had this exact reaction.
