A 307 year old union between Scotland and the United Kingdom could have ended yesterday due to a referendum that supported Scottish independence. In this historical vote, 55% of Scots (2,001,926) voted to stay unionized with the UK, while 45% (1,617,989 votes) of separatist voted to leave. This news comes as a sign of relief for millions. For many Britons, including the Prime Minister David Cameron, a majority vote for independence would’ve jeopardized many UK jobs, cultures, families and of course history.
Scottish politician Alex Salmond lead the “Yes” campaign to separate from the United Kingdom. Last night Salmond conceded defeat in the city of Edinburgh.
“Scotland has by a majority decided not, at this stage, to become an independent country. I accept that verdict of the people and I call on all of Scotland to follow suit in accepting the democratic verdict of the people of Scotland,”- Salmond Via Reuters
Though some may not feel happy with the current verdict, the whole World should recognize the the 84.6% voter turn-out that occurred during this referendum. Just think how powerful an 84.6% voter turn-out would be in a country such as America?!
