If you thought Ferguson, Missouri was the only place hosting a series of unified protests, think again! This week, Hong Kong has been all over the national news due to growing civil unrest for the fight of Pro-Democracy.

This year has been an interesting one for Hong Kong due to the recent news of Hong Kong’s regulation and guidelines of possible  candidates for the 2017 elections. You see, The National People’s Congress (China’s legislature) decided back in August that all possible candidates nominated for the upcoming elections must be vetted by a Chinese committee. This ruling has caused many people, the Hong Kong youth especially, to voice their concern of an election process that essentially will jeopardize potential winners due to the regulation of The National People’s Congress.

Last week, thousands of college students skipped class to boycott and protest around government buildings. As of this weekend, reports indicate that up to 60,000 people are now protesting day in and day out in the streets of Hong Kong. Many fear that this semi-autonomous region ran by Billionaire tycoons will only become more drastic if these pro-democracy protests aren’t made. As of yesterday, reports and video footage showed police arresting and throwing tear gas in the public to disengage the current unified protest. Pictures have shown protesters wearing goggles and even plastic over their faces to counter the tear gas being thrown at them. Here is a link to BBC’s Live coverage of the Hong Kong protests.
