Tory Lanez x Lost Cause [Full Mixtape]

After featuring a series of the highly anticipated Fargo Fridays on the site, Tory Lanez has dropped one of the best mixtapes of 2014 entitled “Lost Cause”. –While perusing through the blogosphere and clicking on your average rhythm & blues write-up, you’re bound to come across the terms ’90’s’ and ‘alt’ attached next to ‘R&B’ . Yet, while it can be a bit lazy (we’re all guilty), every now and then you come across a selection of music that fits the two modifiers perfectly. Hailing from Toronto, which between Drake and The Weeknd (or even PND) seems like a breeding ground for current R&B, Tory Lanez has skillfully integrated himself into an infrastructure supposedly at its tipping point.

Back in March, Lanez released Chixtape II: a nuanced project which masterfully manipulated old samples and interpolations of Ginuwine, Brandy, and TLC into a new-age R&B record that stands toe-to-toe with the year’s best. But that wouldn’t whet Lanez’ appetite, as the hybrid rap-singer pulled a Drake, hunkering down in Texas studios in an effort to produce something just as mesmerizing yet outwardly organic.

By partnering with some of the industry’s youngest and brightest producers, like Ryan Hemsworth, RL Grime, and Noah Breakfast specifically, Lanez has constructed an edgy, sonically-advanced sound with Lost Cause. Adeptly shifting between a sweltering flow and soulful vocals, the 22-year-old proves to be as double-edged as they come.
