Earlier this week Netflix gave a big announcement that involved their collaboration efforts with the Weinstein Company. According to reports, Netflix will debut its first major movie studio film on its exclusive site at the exact same time when the film opens in major theaters. That said movie is going to be Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II “The Green Legend.” With this announcement, Netflix subscribers worldwide will be able to watch the debut of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II in the comfort of their homes or mobile devices at no extra cost.
However, there has already been backlash to this decision by major movie theaters. According to the LA Times, Regal, AMC, Carmike and Cinemark have all made announcements that they will not screen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel in their IMAX screens when it arrives in 2015. There are also reports that Canada’s Cineplex and Europe’s Cineworld are threatening to not play the movie. This is more than likely a tactic to try and get Netflix to back down from this ambitious endeavor, but it doesn’t seem like Netflix is prepared to pass up this grand opportunity. As a matter of fact, there are already reports of other major motion picture films being planned to debut on Netflix.
After the great success of the critically acclaimed original series “Orange Is the New Black.” & the hit HBO political thriller “House Of Cards”, the Netflix Company is trying to make its mark in movies and televisions shows equally. Netflix continues its path as a trailblazer for online video streaming. But more importantly, how great is it that there is a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Yes…..I know the original film came out only 13 YEARS ago, but it’s still an all-time classic, with some of the best fight scenes in cinema history. Like this gem….
