Champions are known for setting trends, but probably no one  foresaw this recent move made by this year’s NBA Champions; the San Antonio Spurs. Today, the San Antonio Spurs announced that Becky Hammon will be the full-time coaching assistant for the 2014-2015 NBA Season. As a result, Becky will become the first female in NBA history to reach a coaching position of this caliber.

Becky Hammon’s coaching IQ comes from her years of playing basketball ( 13 years in the WNBA). In fact, in 2011, Hammon became the 7th women in WNBA history to break the 5,000 point barrier while playing for the San Antonio Stars.

This unorthodox move made by the San Antonio Spurs will have viewers speculating how efficient  Hammon can be for this upcoming season. However, this move should come as no surprise because San Antonio’s coaching and style of play has always been non-traditional. It will be very interesting to see what Becky Hammon can bring to the team, her success this year could potentially create a new trend of women coaching in the NBA!
