The United State’s first black attorney general (82nd overall) has just resigned after almost 6 years of working under the Obama administration. Eric Holder Jr., a graduate of Columbia U Law School, held positions as a corporate attorney and judge of the Superior Court in Washington D.C. before accepting the position of U.S. Attorney general back in 2009.

According to multiple reports, Eric Holder made plans to resign from his position months leading up to today. A prominent Civil Rights Leader, Eric Holder is best known for his support of the Voters Right Act. His most notable accomplishments were shown when Holder placed federal pressure on Texas, Florid, and South Carolina’s Voter ID Laws.

A strong supporter of President Obama and his thoughts on the War on Terrorism, Eric Holder was loathed by Republicans just as much, if not more, than Obama!  In fact, Eric Holder is the first attorney general to be held “in contempt”. Whether hated or respected, Holder’s legacy in the White House was historical. No names have yet been released for a new successor to replace a now vacant  U.S. attorney general position. Eric Holder has not stated what he will be doing post his attorney general tenure, but has hinted signs of going back to his law firm or dealing with Civil Rights departments.

While we wish Holder a “farewell”, we are a bit confused as to why Eric Holder would leave at a pivotal time for American history. Especially with the stemming Mike Brown case and various police brutality cases, it’s kind of ironic to see someone who is so passionate about Civil Rights to resign at this time.
