Awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee since 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize is 1 of 5 awards designated annually for candidates who, “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.
This year instead of awarding solely one recipient, the Norwegian Nobel Committee decided to award two recipients, Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi. Both Malala and Kailash were deemed worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize because of their service against the oppression of young children and children’s rights.
Malala Yousafzai (17) broke history this year becoming the youngest recipient to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala’s rise to global attention came after she survived being shot in the head by the Taliban. This horrible act was said to come as a response to Malala’s efforts to vouch for young Pakistani girls and their education within school.
India’s Kailash Satyarthi (60) was deemed a worthy recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize due to his unwilling service to end child slavery and child labor. In fact, his quest to end child slavery and trafficking hasn’t always been an easy one. Check out the excerpt below via The Guardian:
–-“In my own case I have my broken leg and my broken head and my broken back and my broken shoulder, so different parts of my body have been broken while I was trying to rescue children.
“I lost two of my colleagues – one was shot dead and one was beaten to death. Most of my junior colleagues have been beaten up many, many times. So it is not an easy game.”–
