Last week Pop Star Katy Perry confirmed, via her twitter account, that she has agreed to perform at the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime show, sponsored by Pepsi Co. With less than three months before the single biggest sporting event in America, it’s odd for the “Super Bowl Halftime Show” performer to be decided on such short notice. Normally, artists & their agencies are clamoring in droves for a chance to perform in the Super Bowl. However artists have been critical & reluctant to perform in the Super Bowl because of the NFL’s new stance on the performers to pay them for the privilege of performing at the halftime show. Normally any halftime or award show performance is free from both sides given the potential for high exposure in said events; however the NFL separates itself from any other performance simply because they put on the biggest show in America. The NFL has even brought up the idea of receiving a certain percentage of the chosen artist’s post-super bowl tour revenue as a form of fair payment. There have been reports that have stated the reasoning behind the NFL’s stance on making artists “Pay to play” (other than making more money of course) is that the NFL in recent years has had to spend an enormous amount of money on various accommodations for these high profile artists including travel, lodging, special requests, also the ever increasing cost of producing the halftime show with all its extravagant sound effects, stage sets, lighting (Remember what happened after Beyoncé’s infamous halftime show?
Naturally, once the news came out about the NFL’s plot to receive compensation artists & music exec’s all scoffed at the notion. But nevertheless the show must go on & it only takes one person to say yes. That person is Katy Perry. Although there has been no indications of any “Financial agreements” between Perry’s camp and the NFL, it’s unlikely for the NFL to back down from its original stance. It’s quite possible that something was worked out, but kept very discrete between the parties involved. In the meantime, all we can do is wait in anticipation to what crazy performance the eclectic Katy Perry is planning giving America on Super Bowl Sunday. She was even generous enough to give us a sneak peek of some of her ideas.
