A couple weeks ago President Obama visited El Reno Federal Correctional Institution (a prison outside of Oklahoma City). In doing so, Obama became the first U.S. President to visit a prison while serving in office. This historical visit was important for many reasons :
- The United State’s incarceration system represents a multi-billion dollar industry that heavily punishes citizens who have been convicted for non-violence offenses.
- President Obama is a black male and the U.S. prisons represent a majority of inmates who are also minorities.
- Obama’s visit is one of many steps to reducing mass incarceration sentences for non-violent offenders. Also it shows that our President cares about the reformation process of convicted criminals.
