In recent news, a Sudanese court sentenced a woman to hang to death for marrying outside of her Islamic religion. 27 year old Meriam Yehya Ibrahim has converted to Christianity to marry her Christian husband, however, under Islamic Law this is a violation of her traditional Muslim ways.
“We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged to death,” a judge told Ibrahim.
“I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy,” Ibrahim told the judge.
According to BBC News, the judge also sentenced the 27 year old woman to 100 lashes for also convicting her of adultery.
Due to Ibrahim being 8 months pregnant, the court has ruled that the lashes and sentencing will take place after she has recovered from her birth.
We hope there will be some type of intervention to save Meriam Yehya Ibrahim. Though it may be traditional, this type of practice is unethical and violates any human’s right of freedom of religion. Unfortunately, Sudan is not a place that allow its citizens to convert or go against their traditional customs.
