In an age where professional athletes claim to to be part of the greater cause of fighting systemic oppression, some athletes are actually putting their money on the line. Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett has recently made it public to fully donate his entire 2017 endorsements and jersey proceeds to inner-city programs. Moreover Bennett encourages other athletes to do the same. This statement comes after Bennett was inspired by Chicago artist Chance the Rapper donated $1 Million to public school funding.

“The system is failing our kids, and it will be up to the community and our leaders to help keep the hope alive by focusing on improving our education system and the future of our kids,” Bennett said in the statement. “Any company that decides to invest in me, just know that you’ll be investing in opportunities and providing inspiration for these families — many who feel unnoticed or go unmentioned.” – Michael Bennett
Furthermore, Bennett wants to direct funds specifically to STEM programs to increase minorities’ attendance in the math and science work force.
