In recent news, President Obama’s interview with David Remnick has helped facilitate a wave of “hands-on” policies to decriminalize laws pertaining to marijuana. In fact, members of Congress have started a petition in hopes of getting the Attorney General, General Holder, to delist marijuana as a Class 1 drug! According to the Congressional Letter made yesterday, the letter states how irrational laws have become; especially when pertaining to minorities. The Congressional letter reports ” According to the ACLU, black Americans are four times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites, despite comparable usage from both races”. Furthermore, the letter goes on to discuss how Cocaine and Methamphetamines are Class 2 drugs (lower criminal offence than Class 1). Coincidentally, cocaine and methamphetamines are harsher drugs, in terms of health risks. Moreover, these drugs are also more expensive. In fact, it is not uncommon to find that some people associated with cocaine and methamphetamines have been found to be people of usual affluent wealth.
On January 27, 2014, Trey Radel (R), resigned as Florida’s Congress man for getting caught buying cocaine from an undercover cop. 3.5 grams worth! Likewise, it has been apparent, that YES, even the people passing the laws are users of criminalizing drugs and substances.
Let’s just hope Congress and the President are one accord to help decriminalize these petty offences. Too many Americans are ending up in court rooms for such frivolous crimes such as POM (Possession of Marijuana).
